The Guadalupe-Nipomo dunes complex in Santa Barbara County, California is one of the last remaining intact coastal dunes systems in the United States. With an 18-mile coastline and 22,000 acres of preserved land, the area encompasses creeks, rivers and lakes along with seemingly endless vistas of magnificent rolling dunes. Mountain lions, black bears, bobcats, and coyotes roam the constantly shifting landscape, and over one thousand plants, animals, and insects (many of them rare or endangered) call these highest sand dunes on the western coast home. Once included by the Nature Conservancy in its 'Last Great Places on Earth' campaign, it has been designated by the Department of the Interior as a National Natural Landmark and is identified as having achieved National Seashore status.
